US Threatens Sri Lanka with 'Other Options'
Can the 'Arab Spring' be far behind?
Washington, DC - Urging Sri Lanka to conduct an exhaustive investigation into alleged violations of international humanitarian law, the U.S. today threatened ‘other options’ if Colombo failed to act expeditiously.
Responding to a question raised at today’s daily press briefing, the State Department said Washington continues to urge the Sri Lankan government to demonstrate that is ‘able and willing’ to meet responsibilities for violations of international law by conducting a ‘full, credible, and independent investigation.’ If Sri Lanka failed to meet these demands, “there will be growing pressure from the international community to examine other options,” the State Department said.
Sri Lanka has repeatedly rejected war crimes allegations by the US and its western allies and says it is actively engaged with UN agencies, INGOs and peoples representatives in improving the conditions and the rehabilitation and resettlement.
